Sports Journalism; The Future is here

Much more is involved in sports and games these days than who won, who lost and what. The scenario of sports journalism in India has changed a great deal in the last couple of years, specially after the economic reforms of 1991, when the financial condition of Indians and their buying capacity improved. Some credit may also be given to the advent of color television and the satellite channel revolution.
Untill the end of the 90’s, sports in India meant cricket, but the picture has changed a big deal since then, today Roger Federer’s record 15th grand slam win is placed on the front page of every newspaper in India. Almost every newspaper dedicates two pages to sports and even news item about Formula one and Tour De France are published, which is a unique trend in India.
Similar is the case with electronic media, various new sports channels are launched and news channels also dedicate much of their prime time to sports related content. This trend is not a bubble of any sorts, its there to stay, and will definitely sustain its charm as India is going to host the 2010 commonwealth games as well as the 2011 cricket world cup. Thus the need of the hour for a sports journalist is to grab the opportunity with both hands and work hard to succeed.
